Which self-knowledge app is best in 2026?

It depends on what you are looking for, and that is worth saying before selling anything.

The four best-known apps in this space (Co-Star, The Pattern, CHANI and TimePassages) all work from Western astrology. They are good at it and they have been doing it for years. Ovinchi does something different: it cross-reads five disciplines — birth chart, BaZi, Human Design, palmistry and graphology — into a single interpretation, and builds a journal, a dream log and a goal tracker around it.

If astrology alone is what you want, one of the other four will probably serve you better. If you are after self-knowledge as a daily practice, the comparison looks different.

Ovinchi is the cheapest to start at $4.99 a month, against $7.99 for TimePassages, $8.99 for Co-Star, $11.99 for CHANI and $14.99 for The Pattern. On annual plans Ovinchi is $69.99, below CHANI at $107.99 and The Pattern at $83.99. Co-Star and TimePassages do not list an annual plan on the US store.

One honest caveat: TimePassages sells individual charts for $0.99 each. If all you want is your natal chart once, that beats every subscription here, including ours.

Prices vary by region. These are US App Store prices; European pricing differs, and there TimePassages undercuts Ovinchi on the annual plan.

Which should you pick if you only want astrology?

Co-Star if you value the social side. It is the most polished there: add friends, compare charts, and there is a large community behind it. Its blunt tone is either the reason you love it or the reason you delete it.

TimePassages if you want technical precision. It has been going since 2012 and professional astrologers use it; its charts and transits are the benchmark others get measured against.

CHANI if you would rather read words written by people. That is its central claim and it is a fair one: the interpretations and the guided meditation library are written by human astrologers.

In all three cases, if your interest begins and ends with the birth chart, you do not need Ovinchi.

What if you want more than astrology?

Here the field thins out quickly. None of the other four includes BaZi, Human Design, palmistry or graphology.

The difference is not having five readings instead of one. It is what happens when they are cross-read. The first three systems all start from the same input — date, time and place of birth — and reach different conclusions. When two of them agree on a trait, that reading rests on more than one foundation. When they contradict each other, the contradiction says something too. That is what Ovinchi calls the Unified Interpretation.

Only two of the five have a journal at all. CHANI includes writing prompts tied to current transits. Ovinchi has a mood journal, a gratitude log, free writing and a weekly check-in, plus a dream log that looks for patterns across several dreams, and goals by category with progress tracking.

Co-Star, The Pattern and TimePassages have no journal. That is not a flaw. It is not what they set out to be.

Do any of these apps work in languages other than English?

Only one. Co-Star, The Pattern, CHANI and TimePassages are English-only: the app, the website and even the store listing outside the US are served in English.

Ovinchi is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. That matters more than it sounds. A nuanced reading about your own character is not something most people want to do in their second language, and if you are bilingual, or want to share the app with family who are not comfortable in English, this is likely the deciding factor.

Can you trust a self-knowledge app that uses AI?

It is the most reasonable objection anyone can raise about Ovinchi, and both CHANI and TimePassages use it as an explicit selling point: their readings are written by real astrologers, not by AI.

The honest answer is that it depends how AI is used. In Ovinchi the calculations — planetary positions, BaZi pillars, Human Design type and authority — are deterministic. They come from the traditional rules of each discipline, not from a model improvising. The AI writes and cross-references those readings, following criteria reviewed by human specialists.

That said, if the value for you lies in a specific person having written your chart, CHANI does exactly that, and does it well.
